HISTORICAL CONTEXT - EARLY EXPERIENCES OF JAPANESE AMERICANS

•The first significant wave of immigration started at the end of the 1800s.

•Early Japanese Immigrants experienced intense racism and discrimination.

•They were denied citizenship and had their land owned.

•They cultivated a strong sense of community .

•They survived the tide of anti-Asian sentiment.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT - WORLD WAR II INTERNMENT AND RESISTANCE

•During world war 2, more than 120 thousand Japanese Americans were sent into internment camps only because of their ethnic background.

•The interment had terrible consequences on Japanese American families and businesses.

•Fred Korematsu disobeyed the internment orders and went into hiding.

•Gordon Hirabayashi also protested against the curfew that was placed on Japanese Americans and he was convicted.

•Minoru Yasui became the first person who filed a challenge to the curfew orders and his case went to the Supreme Court.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT - THE JAPANESE AMERICAN CITIZENS LEAGUE (JACL)

• JACL was vital in fighting for the civil rights of Japanese Americans during and after the internment period from its founding in 1929.

•The JACL appealed for resistance against the internment camps.

•During the 1980s, the JACL aggressively pushed to get a formal apology and reparation.

•The JACL remains active today regarding civil rights, immigrant rights, and Japanese American history.

ACTION - WHAT I DID TO SUPPORT THE JAPANESE AMERICAN COMMUNITY

•Created an educational pptx that discusses the history of Japanese American internment during World War II.

•I shared this pptx with close friends and family as well as anyone I could talk to with the aim of educating and entertaining younger people while bringing their attention to the long-lasting effect of the interment.

•Goal of my Action;

•Create awareness.

•Create more empathy and understanding of the community.

ACTION - HOW IT WORKED TOWARD JUSTICE

•The problem my action attempted to solve was the lack of knowledge about the internment camps.

•Testing misconceptions of the Japanese-American people.

•Ensuring more people advocate reparations and recognition for past errors.

•This project educated the unaware people regarding the procedure of internment and the history of Japanese American activists.
